How To Avoid Injuries In The Gym As A Beginner

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Fitness | Tagged , , | Leave a comment

Injuries are scary things, they can kill your motivations and plans for getting into shape as quickly as they can happen. And unfortunately beginners are more prone to injuries when they go to the gym, it could be a ton of reasons, lack of knowledge, wrong form, and so much more, however that can’t stop you from going to your workout, can it? Of course not! I am here to share with you some tips on how to avoid injuries when you go for your workout, after all nobody wants to get hurt as they are going to the gym. So if you are a newbie heading off to the gym, please take the time to read this or if you just want to avoid injuries altogether, which I am sure you do, read this article too.

Learn the techniques – And by this I mean learn the proper techniques if you want to avoid injuries. When your form is wrong or you are bending a muscle in the wrong direction, you can end up pulling or stressing something and that will lead to an injury. This is especially true for beginners as when they start to workout, they still don’t know proper forms, it is best to study up and make sure you are doing an exercise correctly or be warned you can be headed for a world of pain.

stretching before workout

Never skip stretching or a good warm up.

Too much, too soon – Weights are very daunting for a lot of people, and for beginners this can be a very big cause of injuries. If you want to avoid injuries, and of course, you definitely want to, make sure to test the weight of each exercise properly. Do not be embarrassed that the weights are light, you will strengthen yourself up by coming back. Just focus on being able to avoid injuries for now during your workout, that is the most important thing to concentrate on.

Forgetting to stretch or warm up – Make sure you take the time to ready your muscles for a good workout. Some people say that you shouldn’t warm up but it really depends, I personally believe that a good stretching will help you avoid injuries and so far I have yet to experience otherwise. My suggestion, get proper warm up techniques or stretching that best focuses on muscles that you will be working out for the day.

Training too often – This is not isolated to beginners only, truth be told. There are times that you are so driven that you workout too often, on a daily basis and forget to put a rest day or time in between. This is a big no-no and can really lead to injuries. Muscles need rest, which is why it is advised to exercise every other day when going weight training or at the very least focus on a different muscle group each day. To avoid injuries, make sure to allot enough rest for all your muscles, give them time to repair themselves and grow. Simple enough rule, if your body aches, don’t workout heavily, this will really help you avoid injuries.

A rest day is a must – Working in conjunction with the tip above, a rest day must stay a rest day. People tend to get really involved in the gym, and quite frankly you end up sneaking off to the gym on your rest day, again if you want to avoid injuries, do not do this. As involved as you are with your workout routine, when it is indeed time for a rest day, do just that, rest. You’ve worked hard and your body can appreciate you for it plus it will help you avoid injuries.

Forgetting to pair off with proper nutrition – As beginners start the gym, sometimes the focus is solely on working out and forgetting that the body needs proper fuel. By fuel I mean a good diet, proper and healthy food that the body needs to strengthen itself. I suggest researching a good diet and maybe focusing on proteins, as always in order to avoid injuries, do not dive in a crash diet, take the time and gradually change your diet into something that works for your particular workout.

Cool down – Just like how you had to warm up, never forget the importance of taking the time to cool down your muscles. In order to avoid injuries, get your heart rate back to normal, perhaps by walking or just slowly moving. This is especially true if you are on the treadmill but perhaps for anyone’s overall workout, take the time to cool down as well. Don’t disregard this as most people do, a good cool down can make the difference of an injury and a great a workout.

Don’t go guns a blazing – Getting the drive to go to the gym is great, but a lot of people are overly enthusiastic about it and tend to charge in with all guns whipped out. Not good, not good at all. Make sure you ease into the workout and really take the time to build up, don’t overdo the workout or you won’t be able to avoid injuries. Your top priority is to avoid injuries while you are there, along side with getting fit of course but you can’t get fit if you have injuries now can you?

personal trainer

When in doubt, get a personal trainer especially if it is your first time to hit the gym.

Doing the same exercise over and over – The fun part about going to the gym is that there are so many things to do and while repetition in each exercise is advised, keeping it the same all the time is not something you want to do. Mix it up and learn new things, it will really help you avoid injuries and keep your workout interesting. Feel free to use some of the other machines when you’ve learned how to use them in order to avoid injuries.

When in doubt ask an expert – I highly advise this for beginners or those who just started again. Quite a few memberships come with a few free sessions with the resident trainer, I highly suggest taking them in order to avoid injuries, if there aren’t free sessions, bite the bullet and pay for a session or two. Your safety is the utmost importance, and besides getting injured during a workout is a lot more costly and inconvenient as well, so when you aren’t sure of anything, get an expert to teach you some stuff, such as form and what to focus on.

These are just some of the really great tips in order to avoid injuries when you workout. I highly suggest doing all of them as you can never be too safe when it comes to your body. Again nothing can stop a good gym session faster an injury and nothing destroys a newly found drive to get fit than hurting yourself and putting yourself out of commission. Take the time and make sure to take care of yourself, cause no one else will. Stay healthy!

No More Hot Dogs for Snoop Dogg

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Food | Tagged , , | Leave a comment

Hot dogs, perhaps one of the most popular and well-known snacks in the world however if you are conscious with what you eat, which you should be, you should think again before putting some ketchup and mustard on that sandwich.

Snoop Dogg recently watched how a hot dog is made in an episode of the Jimmy Kimmel Live, in this show a new part of the program which has been dubbed “Howz it Mizzade with Snoop Dogg.” In this video you can really see how Snoop Dogg is trying to guess from the onset of the show what is being made. His guesses ranges quite a bit, first off he calls out cereal and cream of wheat as the rather big lump of brown colored meat is slammed on the industrial sized grinder. It is obvious from the onset that he does not know what he got himself into, as Snoop Dogg continues on to guess even mentioning the word manure among his guesses and when he finally does he is shocked and pretty much swears off from hot dog eating ever again.

Quite frankly if you ever enjoy a hot dog or two, you’ll want to see how it is made and how it will really turn you off from ever eating another hot dog again.

The reaction of Snoop Dogg was indeed a funny one but it really puts to light how much processed meats we really unwittingly put into our system. This is something we need to start really looking into.

As most of you know, I am a vegan and perhaps a hot dog is not the main reason but it is one of the many reasons why I decided to opt becoming a vegan. Hot dogs although a crowd favorite is obviously processed and is rather unnatural, the stuff they put in each hot dog is just staggering and will really shock most people. As you can see that pasty brown substance is packed in an almost plastic casing, called a cellulose, which are removed, others are made with natural casings, which is a surprising name for me since this is rather far from natural. Anyways, that just shows that the ground up meat, and when I say ground, I mean seriously grounded up meat is placed in a casing, then it is cooked either by smoking it or other ways.

And that pretty much shows how a hot dog is made, if the video hasn’t dissuaded you and the reaction of Snoop Dogg made you laugh, you may want to rethink that hot dog for lunch you are planning. The meats they place in most hot dogs are the left over parts of various animals, they are the parts most people throw out. Personally the fact that they are made from animal suffering really turns me away from it, I do hope it does convince a lot of you to walk away as well.

I understand the need or choice that people make when they decide to eat meat, I am not one to judge nor tell them the ways of vegan however I really do suggest you walk away from the processed meats at least. They are not good for you, they do the body harm and quite frankly, we do not need them with so many fresh ingredients surrounding us. Hot dogs are one of the said items that I highly suggest you do not consume.

There are plenty healthier options to change instead of the regular all meat hot dog that you usually consume as they are busy clogging your system up with goodness knows what. I am not not telling you to abruptly decide to become a vegan, but if you go down that road, that is great however if you do eat meat please think about what you are placing into your mouth and consequently into your body.

I’d like to commend Snoop Dogg on watching how hot dogs are made and hope that a lot of people are turned off from these processed meats or at the very least start questioning the usual meats that they consume.

Inspirational Celebrity Vegans

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Health | Tagged , | Leave a comment

As a vegan, who is not ashamed to admit that I am still learning so much, there are so many inspirational celebrity vegans who have really helped me reach where I am today. They are fairly much institutional names when you mention anything vegan, you can find their names quite easily. As for me, I am really inspired by these people and look up to them as a health enthusiast, a vegan and a person in general. I am happy to share with you some of the most inspirational celebrity vegans that I know of.

Alicia Silverstone – The Clueless star, which I loved her in by the way, who didn’t? Anyhow Alicia Silverstone has been a vegan since she was 21 years old, and using her influence as a movie star, she started her blog and started to share her life as a vegan, often posting inspirational stories, events and more to really get your motivation going. It is good to see that her early life of fame did not hinder her from following the vegan lifestyle and as well as a being an advocate for that kind life. Again I am a super fan of hers and she continues to be a strong inspirational source for me, while being who she is. Kudos to her!

Paul McCartney – Sir Paul McCartney, perhaps at one point was indeed a vegan but is now more of an advocate for vegetarian lifestyle. He is still a wonderfully bright beacon of motivation for a lot of people. He knows how cruel and inhumane the treatment of animals are within slaughterhouses and urges people to choose the vegetarian lifestyle. Add to that his immense popularity from the ever popular Beatles, this man is an institute beyond a healthy lifestyle, pretty much every household knows his name and I hope he continues the good fight to really get a lot of people to turn towards the vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, he is a wonderful influencer and inspirational to boot.

Mayim BialikThe Big Bang Theory star has been a vegan since she was 19-years-old, can you imagine that? I don’t know about you but I was still a vegetarian then and still learning the ropes, but again at that young age she already went for the vegan lifestyle, that alone is amazing in itself. She has released a vegan cookbook since then and continues to be an inspirational source of veganism, I hope that she continues to provide motivation to others follow her stead and get some more people to try the vegan lifestyle. And I cannot stop loving her character from the popular TV show, I mean who could, right?

James Cromwell – “That’ll do pig, that’ll do…” oh shivers. This actor is an animal rights activist and a very outspoken vegan. I really think he is an inspirational man to everyone, given that he has been a wonderful actor for so many years, he continues to be a driving motivation for so many people like myself, who just want to let others know that together we can change a lot of things with something as simple as our daily choices.

Ariana Grande – The popular singer is indeed a vegan since 2013 and the wonderful thing is, she continues the lifestyle to this day. Her love of animals has turned her to the healthier lifestyle and has chosen to continue her fight for their rights as well as the continued advocacy of the vegan lifestyle. A wonderfully inspirational young celebrity that a lot of kids look up to, I hope she keeps up her motivational lifestyle and that a lot of people choose to follow her.

Woody Harrelson – The Hunger Games star has been a vegan for over 10 years, that’s an amazing achievement on its own but he continues to this day to live the healthy lifestyle. Providing motivation to the manliest of men, this actor has been a wonderful role model for a lot of people. There is even some news that he inspired Liam Hemsworth to choose the vegan lifestyle, if that isn’t enough of an inspirational reason for you to join then I’m not sure what is.

Ellen Page – Another actress who is a strong supporter of her vegan lifestyle, she is outspoken and inspirational for a lot of people, myself included. She continues to share her views on the vegan lifestyle and how it affects not only herself but everyone on the planet, in the hopes that it will turn others towards this moral choice. A motivation to teens to young adults and maybe even further, I really applaud her for using her influence in the right way.

Moby – The famous musician has and still is a vegan for over 30 staggering years. He shares with The Rolling Stone his reasons for choosing the vegan lifestyle after a long stint of vegetarianism, as he does not want to be part of the animals suffering in anyway. A motivation both musically and lifestyle-wise, this man is a powerful driving factor for the vegan lifestyle.

Peter DinklageThe Game of Thrones star, or should I say superstar? Is a very outspoken, according to PETA and he continues to support the lifestyle. As perhaps one of the favorite celebrities of our time, the actor keeps going towards the heights of coolness when you know that he had a vegetarian diet even as a child, isn’t that simply amazing?

James Cameron – The director of the ever-famous Titanic shares that the option to eat animals is just that, a choice and now that moves on to question the morality of that choice. A vegan to this day, he continues to support the efforts of others as a motivation and source of inspiration.

Sia – The quirky singer with the trademark look but still hidden face, has been a vegan since 2014, perhaps one of the more normal things as others point out but again the singing superstar has indeed left a wonderful inspiration to a lot of people. I hope her lifestyle proves to be a motivation for others to put down the animal products in their life and turn to a cruelty free standard of living.

Joaquin Phoenix – Since the age of 3, Joaquin Phoenix has been a vegan. Let that sink in for a bit. He has single handedly been a motivation for other actors and actresses to turn towards the healthier way of life, and has even made a critically acclaimed documentary that just proves to be an inspirational beacon for others to follow.

Ffor those of you who want to really find inspirational people or celebrities to follow on the road of becoming a vegan, look to this list. There are still so many other celebrities who are vegan and stand as wonderful motivation for so many people. Again I look towards them and hope they continue the good fight, we need all the help we can get to promote this healthy standard of living and we want more people to join our side. Additionally if you plan to start becoming a vegan, it wouldn’t hurt to do some research on how to get you on this green healthy lifestyle. Stay healthy!

Keeping Motivated During A Workout Slump

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Fitness | Tagged , , | Leave a comment

There are times in your fitness life that you hit an invisible wall, for many of us, it has happened more than once and quite honestly it is a slump that is difficult to break. Everyone needs a little workout motivation from time to time. Again, it isn’t something you need to be ashamed about or worried about. Having something to really keep you going is always good to have. After all a little workout motivation is useful for everyone and can really help when you’re in a pickle. So without further ado, here is a list of some workout motivation tips to help you push forward with your fitness plans.

Journal your progress and feelings – Nothing helps motivate you then seeing how far you’ve come after some time. During your fitness it is wise to track your progress by writing it down but to add on to that you should also write down how great you are feeling after a tough session. This will not only provide you with an awesome source for workout motivation, but it will really show you how far you’ve gotten in the past how many months or so you’ve been working out.

Remember why you started – Everyone starts getting into fitness for one reason or another, and whatever that reason is should be a driving force. Admittedly over time, your general reason could change for a new and better goal, who knows but it is always good to remember why you started in the first place. Give yourself a workout motivation by returning to the very reason you motivated to begin in the first place.

Make your goals visual by creating and strictly following a workout plan.

Make your goals visual by creating and strictly following a workout plan.

Think about how bad it is to skip on a workout – You’ve gotten really far on your fitness journey. Take the time to think about how regretful you’ll feel after skipping out on the next session. Use this as your workout motivation in order to push yourself out of the slump. Remember that you can look back and remember how you regret missing out on another powerful workout session.

Join a fitness group – This works wonders as a workout motivation. When you are hitting a wall maybe it is time to find comfort in like-minded people, find a group who will enjoy your particular type of training. They will really help keep up the workout motivation and push you to limits beyond what you think you can do. This is especially ideal when you want to learn more or just need an extra push in the right direction, the additional help is always welcomed in anyway possible.

Focus on that wonderful afterglow – As great as fitness is for our body, there is just something so alleviating about that wonderful feeling of satisfaction you get from after a great workout. Personally I love that endorphin rush at the end of a session and it keeps me happy pretty much throughout the day, I’m sure a lot of you have felt it several times over and getting addicted to that feeling is an awesome workout motivation.

Keep yourself surrounded by motivation – There is some power to motivational quotes, I truly believe that. It’s great to hear these things, read it or even talk about it. There are so many before us that have shared a lot of motivational quotes that are great for workout motivation.

Place some goals in sight – While your overall target is greater fitness, it would be ideal to have some minor goals set on a daily basis. Such as I will walk an extra two kilometers on the treadmill today, or I will do an extra set of reps on the bench today, things like that. These are great workout motivation ideas to really push you to keep going on a regular basis to the gym or to do your workout session.

When in doubt, bring your best buddy – There is something to be said about having your best friend go with you to the gym. He or she will push you harder and if they are like my best buddies, they will be a great workout motivation to reach the next fitness level. Besides going to the gym with them makes it so much more fun and makes it feel less and less like exercising rather than hanging out.

Use fun apps – Assuming it works for you, there are a ton of apps that can really help out as a way to increase the fun in your daily fitness workout and they are wonderful workout motivation tools as well. Such as a famous Pokemon Go app that really gets a person walking all over the place. There are so many other apps that can really help you push yourself and really keep your workout motivation at an all time high. I like the charity apps that donate a few cents every time I finish a kilometer, it gets to donate to my favorite charity and I get a good workout in, so a great win-win situation.

Compete with yourself – Much like placing a goal in front of yourself, you need to really compete with yourself as a workout motivation tool. You just have to keep improving everyday and sticking it to your older self! There is a great satisfaction to really beating yourself with an extra rep or two the following day, it also gives you a better overall fitness score in reality.

Things won't get boring when you join a fitness group or bring your buddies to the gym!

Things won’t get boring when you join a fitness group or bring your buddies to the gym!

Remember your improvements – It may not seem very obvious at the beginning of your fitness journey, but you are slowly improving. You are getting stronger, faster, able to endure more and a lot more. Each day you are stepping towards your overall goal of being a better person than you were the day before. This is a powerful workout motivation tool for anyone who is dead set on really improving him or herself through getting fit and quite frankly I applaud them and cheer them on.

Prove to yourself that you can do it – In the end the true workout motivation can come from you. Repeat to yourself: “I can do this!” And now you don’t want to call yourself a liar do you? Prove to yourself that you can do it and go for the extra mile, in fact prove yourself even more by going an extra mile more with each fitness session. This will really help you push further and get stronger, keep doing this and soon enough that slump will be left in the dust.

The hard work that you have already put in from when you started is slowly paying off, keep going towards that goal and finish strong, because workout motivation as I mentioned really comes from you and what you think. Stay positive, stay strong and you will reach your goal even if you need to reach it one step at a time. Believe me that each step is worth it, because you are worth it. Stay healthy!

Top 10 Must-Have Fitness Apps

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Fitness | Tagged , , | Leave a comment

The world just keeps getting more and more amazing. Just a few posts before this, I shared my list of top 10 must-have vegan apps and now I thought to myself: if there are apps for that, what other apps are out there to help us? And lo and behold, it was so easy to find several fitness apps that should pretty much fit the bill. A fitness app is an app that will somehow help or push you along the lines of fitness and reach your goal of a wonderful beach body. After testing a few of them, here are the top 10 that I think a fit person should have with them at pretty much all times.

  1. Charity Miles (iOS | Android) – This fitness app is wonderful for runners or even walkers or even bikers. This simple and free app has several sponsors who will display their logo or ad in the background as you go about your exercise and they will donate a few cents for every mile you walk. It’s simple, pushes you to do more and at the same time gives back to those less fortunate, a pretty amazing fitness app if you ask me.
    Charity Miles

Charity Miles not only is a good fitness self-help but a good way to do charity at the same time.

  2. Digifit iCardio (iOS | Android) – This is a free fitness app however it needs a compatible heart rate monitor which could be a challenge. But if you are seriously into tracking your exercise in a very hardcore way, this is the fitness app for you. Simply download and connect to the heart rate monitor and it will give you information about your exercise session.
  3. Endomondo (iOS | Android) – If you don’t have time for a trainer or much time to figure things out, this might be the fitness app you want in your smart phone. This app has a coaching feature that works with premium users but can really help you reach your goals if you listen to it, might be worth a visit if you have no other source of information or need help planning your routine.
  4. Fitbit (iOS | Android) – By now you must have heard of this fitness app, and yes it does come with a special apparatus but the fitness app can work without it too. Of course if you actually have the Fitbit monitor it will help you track your information in a more solid and concrete fashion. Works best when it can count your calories, blood pressure and so on.
  5. Fitstar (iOS | Android) – Having a hard time figuring out a home routine that you need and should do? Well this fitness app can help you out, simply log in and download for free, it has a basic workout routine that doesn’t need any equipment and you can do it at the comfort of your own home. The premium account however has the ability to provide a “get strong” workout if you purchase it.
    Fitstar

Fitstar is great for those who prefer working out from home without much needed exercising equipment.

  6. Jefit Workout (iOS | Android) – For the gym buff in all of us. Not quite sure what exercises you need to do? Well look to this fitness app to help you figure things out. It can track your reps and sets, plus the weight you’ve done which will really help you out, a no frills type of app and the premium or pro version is quite helpful too.
  7. The Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout (iOS | Android) – As the name implies, this is the ideal fitness app for those who only have a few minutes to spare. Still available for free, this fitness app will give you one heck of a workout for a spare 7 minutes of your time. Perfect for the person who always has one foot out the door.
  8. Lose It! (iOS | Android) – Having trouble counting your calories and figuring out the workout routine needed to battle fat? Well here is the perfect fitness app for you. If you tend to consume more American brand items, this can really help you count the calories and trim that belly fat down. It helps and works with other fitness apps, counting calories and how much you consume or lose within a day.
  9. Rockmyrun (iOS | Android) – While this fitness app may not be free, if you really need a playlist for your run or workout, this should be the fitness app you get. It can figure out your tempo and create a playlist based off that, isn’t that just perfect for when you need to get into the groove of things?
    Rockmyrun

Rockmyrun app is a pretty cool one for those who especially love music.

  10. Vida Health Coach (iOS) – This one is a little expensive at $15 a week, but it gives you access to a real live health coach who will work with you no matter what, so in the end it isn’t really at all that pricey considering the prices of health coaches nowadays. The coaches available have a range of specialties and you can pick the one that works for you and run with it.

There are a lot more apps out there that will work for whatever you are into. Take the time to try a fitness app or two and you’ll really see some lasting results. Stay healthy!

Bedtime Drink to Blast Belly Fat

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Food | Tagged , , , | Leave a comment

As you get that well deserved night’s sleep after a grueling day, your brain is probably working overtime with thoughts of weight loss: you are already mentally counting the calories in your head for tomorrow’s meals, figuring where to get those extra steps so that you will meet your walking target or what time you will hit the gym tomorrow to get a good workout in. While that’s all and good, what if I told you however that I have a list of a bedtime drink or two that will help you lose belly fat as you sleep? Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Well keep on reading my good friends, as it is time to share the bedtime drink that will blast that belly fat!

Note that the following list of course needs to be supported with regular diet, a steady workout and of course a good handle on snacking. A bedtime drink along side a full plate of pizza or a late night burger doesn’t count, it is best consumed maybe a few minutes before you hit the sack or intend to turn in if you really want to lose belly fat.

A warm glass of milk – The classic and often clichéd bedtime drink is one of the greats indeed. This of course work both for those inside and outside of the vegan lifestyle (almond milk works perfectly, and it’s vegan!). Take a nice, warm glass before bed in order to get better sleep. Getting better sleep leads to less cravings the next day, less cravings leads to less snacking, which in turn leads to weight loss and the eventual target to lose belly fat. So if you are tossing and turning at night quite a bit, make sure to have a tall, warm glass of milk as a bedtime drink and you should see some good results in a few weeks or so.

almond milk

Almond milk is an excellent source of calcium, which helps the brain make melatonin. Plus, warm milk may spark pleasant and relaxing memories of your mother helping you fall asleep. (source: webmd.com)

Chamomile tea – If I haven’t been singing praises of tea enough, then I haven’t been doing it right. Chamomile tea makes for a wonderful bedtime drink as it also provides you with a good night of rest. As mentioned before, getting a full night’s sleep is really good for you as it helps regulate your hunger the next day, regulated hunger means you won’t needlessly reach for whatever is lying around which is highly not good for you, thus you gain weight and move further away from your weight loss goals. So if milk isn’t your er… cup of tea, reach for a cup of tea as a bedtime drink, chamomile tea to be precise!

Lemon and cucumber juice – This concoction of tasty ingredients is easy and fast to make. All you need is a lemon, cucumber, some ginger and a touch of parsley along with water and mix it altogether. As many of you know, lemon water really helps you lose belly fat, along with cucumber, which is great for fairly much any diet out there, this bedtime drink will help you lose weight as you sleep. The weight loss is due to the increase in metabolism thanks to this bedtime drink, as well as the natural diuretic effect it brings, which help you get things going in the morning. If you are looking for a powerful bedtime drink, this is perhaps one of the most useful ones albeit the extra effort to make it but even then most of the ingredients are easily found in a supermarket near you and let’s face it, if you want to move forward with weight loss, that little extra effort is worth it, wouldn’t you agree?

Lemon water – Assuming the prior combination is a little too much for you to make, I think a glass of lemon water is enough of a substitute for a bedtime drink. I dedicated a whole article to the benefits of drinking lemon water and I can’t sing its praises enough times. It really is a wonderful detox drink that clears up the system and helps you get some much needed nutrients as well, it is wise to keep a glass by your bed if you want to move forward with your weight loss and if you really want to lose belly fat fast, maybe consume several glasses of lemon water within the day and not limit it to a bedtime drink only.

A tall glass of water – Well this should be pretty standard in most ideas for a bedtime drink. If all the complicated stuff is a little too much for you, make sure that you drink a glass of water before you sleep. The body needs to stay hydrated in order to work its magic against fats and calories, so it is ideal to keep yourself as hydrated as possible in order to maximize your bodily function, in turn of course this will lead to weight loss. As a bedtime drink, water is as simple as it gets but of course it could get a little dull in the long run for some but keep at it and you’ll experience effects such as your goal to lose belly fat.

chamomile tea

Chamomile tea is best known for its calming effects. You can never go wrong with this after a stressful day!

Pear detox – This is a different mixture that will help regulate your tummy: get a pear, a lemon, some cucumber slices and a tablespoon of honey, and mix it altogether. This will help regulate your metabolism, while making sure that your body is well hydrated and healthy. Additionally studies have shown that this will help regulate appetite for the next day, again helping you in the battle against weight loss, so as a bedtime drink, this meets pretty much everything you want it to do. You’ll start to see some lasting effects after a week or two, especially if you want to lose belly fat along the way.

Grape juice – Normally juice before you sleep is a little off but this time, grape juice is the perfect bedtime drink to have before going to sleep. Research has found that grape juice can turn your body into a fat burning machine. As long as your grape juice is 100% natural and is in controlled quantities, the effect is quite positive and helps weight loss, making it a very good bedtime drink to consume each night or at least once a week, alternating along with other the other drinks on this list, of course.

These are just some of the best drinks that you can really enjoy before going to bed. Getting a full 8 hours is important of course and as you can see from some of the selections, these drinks are to aid your weight loss by helping you get your full hour of sleep. As mentioned prior, pair off the bedtime drink with enough exercise and a healthy diet during the day and you’ll be enjoying the wonderful perks of weight loss in no time. So remember get a full night’s rest and don’t ignore the importance of a bedtime drink. Cheers and stay healthy!

11 Reasons Why You Need A Personal Retreat

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Wellness | Tagged , , | Leave a comment

Everyone needs to take a vacation or a retreat every so often, and you need a personal retreat yourself. Can’t get away from work or whatever project you are doing? Keep reading and you will see why you really, really, REALLY need to take that personal retreat to gather yourself or just to meditate and get yourself back on the right path. Trust me you really will take that personal retreat once you realize how useful and helpful it is to go on these mini vacations.

1.Healthy – Retreats have been found to reduce stress. Stress is no joke and there are tons of ways to deal with it, however a personal retreat is definitely one of the top ones for me. Take the time to get into meditation, which will further reduce your stress during your personal retreat and allow yourself to really think about what is important and what you need to focus on.

2.Focus on projects – Sometimes when you are knee-deep into work, you can’t see what really matters or what project needs your full attention. Take the time to step back during a personal retreat and see from a step or two back, this really puts things into perspective and allows you to work more efficiently in the long run, this will of course end up with more favorable results for whatever project you may have on your plate. I can’t tell you how much this has saved me from making mistakes by rushing a project, I tend to step back, get into some meditation and reassess my situation before moving forward. This has helped me properly engage whatever project I have on my plate.

journal and goal-setting

Keep a journal or keep your goal-setting on paper for motivation.

3.Journaling – During your personal retreat, take the time to jot down on a journal. Studies have shown that it is good for stress relief and has a positive effect on people when they take the time to write down whatever thoughts they have. I love writing in my own journal, sometimes my thoughts get really deep or other times it is silly and pointless, but whatever it is, I take the time to write it and it has really helped me thus far. It’s also a great form of self expression and emotional outlet.

4.Self-worth – Make time to take care of someone extremely important to you: YOURSELF. On your personal retreat, give in to a little (or more) well-deserved pampering. It’s a good oomph on your self importance. The world often goes by and we forget that if anyone is going to treat us right, it should be ourselves.

5.Off the grid – When you are on a personal retreat, it would be wise to disconnect yourself from the world and allow some real meditation. We often try to get some time to ourselves however we are distracted by our tablets, smart phones and so much more as we check our social media and email pretty much anywhere. When you are on personal retreat do not do that, I know it may sound a little extreme for some but this is the only way you will ever get into deep meditation. Fine you can check your mail or social media but perhaps limit it to once a day while on personal retreat.

6.Special treatment – When on personal retreat make it special for yourself, it can be however which way you want it since it is as the name states, a personal matter. Enjoy yourself, heaven knows you deserve it. Tailor fit the personal retreat just for you, after all no one knows what you like more than yourself, might as well make the most out of it to really enjoy the vacation.

7.Encourage others – While on personal retreat it would be good to go into meditation and think about the people who you should appreciate. Write them some letters that you can share when you get back, for sure some of them could really use the encouragement and this will really bring you guys closer together. I love doing this since I have so much to be grateful for and there are so many people that I want to thank, during my own personal retreat I go through my meditation to make sure that I can really assess who it is I want to thank.

8.Take the time to finish DIYs – There might be gift ideas that you want to make yourself or something for the house that you’ve been wanting to do but have put off for quite some time, well, delay it no more. During your personal retreat you can finally do those things that you have been putting off. It can be seen as a sort of meditation for quite a few people, as most of the DIY stuff is usually born of a hobby or interest so it should be fun and relaxing.

DIY as personal retreat

For some people, doing a DIY project is a way to meditate and relax. Let that creativity flow!

9.Reading time – There is a great satisfaction in getting through some books you have been dying to read. Page after wonderful page of a book you’ve put on the backburner is something you can really enjoy during your personal retreat. I like to sit back with a glass of wine and read up on my books, sometimes even when I’m soaking in the tub, it’s just so relaxing and very stress relieving.

10.Goal setting – During a personal retreat, you need to reassess your goals in mind. Have you achieved what you set out to do a month ago? The start of the year? Last year? Perhaps you have or perhaps you haven’t. It would be ideal to really take stock in yourself and see your goals and what you have achieved. Of course it would be ideal to also see where you can improve as this is a continuous process for all of us. Keep setting your goals during your personal retreat or during your meditation sessions in order to really get yourself a step towards being your ideal self.

11.Coming home refreshed – The satisfaction of coming home stress-free and a lot more refreshed is something people around you will truly appreciate. When you aren’t riddled with stress or problems, your general aura is better and people can sense that. They will thank you for taking the time to take care of yourself during your personal retreat that they too can see how positive it was for you and who knows, perhaps they might be inspired to take a personal retreat on their own as well.

There should always be a good time to step back, relax and see where you are going in life. You’ll thank yourself in the long run. Stay healthy!

There is just something so powerfully alluring when you see toned arms, isn’t there? I mean not to sound overly strange about it, but you have to admit toned arms that you know have gone through rigorous exercise or an insane workout routine is just so eye catching that you can’t help but stair as a couple of strong arms pass by. Arms that have mastered a good workout also decreases cellulite. Now let’s get those toned arms on you, I will share with you today some great exercises that will best bring out the muscles in your arms and make the most out of your workout routine.

Uneven push up – For toned arms the uneven push up is an ideal exercise to add to your workout routine. You will need a medicine ball ideally for this but a firm ball that won’t roll out from under you will be fine too, if that is not possible a hard sturdy surface will do. Get into regular push position but use the medicine ball to elevate one hand and keep it on top of it. Proceed to do a push up and do a few reps. After switch to the other arm and repeat.

uneven push-up

Uneven push-up is one of the most convenient propped workout for toning arms.

Biceps and arm curls – The typical arm curl is always a cliché in any workout routine montage and for a good reason, they really give you toned arms. All you need are some free weights for this one and simply hold one weight in each hand, standing straight with legs shoulder length apart, palms facing forward with the weights. Simply lift each arm one at a time, with the weights up to your chest, slowly return to starting position and alternate with the other arm, repeat several times and in multiple sets for the maximum effect.

Tricep swings – Here is another exercise you will want to include into your workout routine in order to get toned arms. Simply lie on your back with your knees up. Hold some weights above your head with your arm straight, then slowly raise it forward as though it is straight away from your chest. Return to starting position, repeat for a few more reps then switch arms.

Kickback – Stand straight up for this exercise, hold some weights in each arm, keep both feet a little wider apart than your shoulders. Now bend forward without bending your knees, keep both arms parallel to your back, you should be at a 90-degree angle from the floor ideally. Now slowly move both arms downwards by bending the elbows, as they reach past your waist, twist them towards each other and keep going until it reaches your chest, by then the palms will be facing you, return to the starting position and repeat. Do this workout routine at least 3 sets and you’ll get your toned arms in a few weeks or so.

Get-up plank – Lay on your side, propped up by your elbow and one arm, keep both feet tucked behind your knees and allow your hips to slightly bend upwards, with your other free hand hold some weights. For this exercise, use the arm with the weights and reach out as high as you can while lifting your lower body higher, lift your hips upwards while staying in the position. Hold for a second or two and return to starting position, repeat a few more times and alternate with the other side to achieve toned arms.

Split squat rotation – This exercise will really be good for your workout routine to get those toned arms. You’ll ideally need a medicine ball but any weights will do as long as you can hold it with both hands. Now start off with your right foot in front of you and your left foot in the back with your left knee slightly bent, almost like a lunging position. Keep the weights in front of your chest with both hands on each side. Now to start, stand on your toes with the left foot, get your knee as straight as possible and raise your entire body upwards, while that is happening twist your body to the right and lift the weights above your head with both arms stretching upward as far as you can go. Return to starting position, repeat several times over and then switch sides. Repeat a few more times to get toned arms.

Lunging bicep curls – Again grab some weights, stand up straight with both your arms holding one weight each, keep your legs shoulder width apart. To get your toned arms for this exercise, simply lunge forward with your right foot, and simultaneously curl your left arm towards your chest with palm facing you and return to the old position. Switch sides and keep repeating until tired.

Chest-fly hand off – For this exercise to get toned arms, you need some more free weights. Lie on your back and keep your knees bent and pointing upwards, with your feet tucked close to your buttocks. Put the weights on your right hand and keep them to the sides as if you are in a cross formation, however keep your elbows slightly bent, as if you are hugging a big, big tree. Now slowly move both arms towards each other right in front of your chest while keeping your elbows slightly bent, when they meet in the middle switch the weights to the other hand and return to the starting position. Repeat a few more times and you’ll get a good sweat in this workout routine and toned arms after a few weeks.

tricep workout

Of course, don’t forget to set those triceps to work too!

Shoulder cycles – Again grab a couple weights for each arm, and stand up straight, legs as usual need to be shoulder length apart. Keep the weights and your arms at the sides, palms facing towards your thighs, raise both arms upwards up to your chest, keep palms facing inwards still, then at the same length move it horizontally to your sides, you should be in a cross formation with both weights on your sides, slowly return to starting position. Repeat a few more times to get toned arms.

Overhead tricep extensions – Stand up once more with the usual position for your legs, shoulder length apart. Now grab one free weight, ideally a dumbbell and place it behind your head gripping it with both arms, keep the elbows bent and let it sit slightly above your nape. Now extend your arms and straighten your elbows for this exercise in order to get toned arms, make sure to grip your free weights well, you don’t want to drop it on your head, repeat a few more times and you’re done for the day.

These are just some of the best routines that will give you the ideal toned arms that you are aiming for. All it takes is some exercise that particularly targets the arms that you can add to your workout routine. All it takes is a little sweat, some free weights here and there, and consistency, and you will get those toned arms that you have been aching for. Stay healthy!

Traveling as a Vegan

Posted on by Lillian Lewis / Posted in Food | Tagged , , | Leave a comment

Traveling is a lot of fun, there’s so much to see and do all over the world that if you wanted to see and do everything, you’ll need many more lifetimes to achieve it all. However traveling as a vegan can be a little tough, given one’s dietary needs, eating healthy becomes a challenge in many ways. Finding out what is inside each dish is difficult to say the least, purchasing items while trying to converse with someone who does not speak your language is a hurdle as well and finding out if the item in question was a product of any animal by product is almost impossible. These are the challenges of traveling as a vegan among other things, but all is not lost my wanderlust friends, keep your backpack on and read my list of tips for traveling as a vegan.

Research – The internet has made travel loads easier, just before you start your trip take the time to research potential restaurants or hotels that you can stay in, it is ideal to make sure you are prepared as possible to find places that can cater to eating healthy or rooms that are vegan friendly. Additionally when traveling as a vegan, you don’t want to jump in to any place without being prepared, research your trip location for local delicacies that agree with your diet or famous souvenirs and if it is alright for you.

Learn simple lines – Again the internet is your best buddy for this, it is so easy to look up local dialects to ask if: “Is there fish/meat/animal fat in this?” Again when traveling as a vegan it is best to be ready to ask these to local vendors in order to make sure you are getting something that agrees with you. Just make sure you also research their potential yes or no as well, which shouldn’t be at all impossible.

research when traveling as a vegan

When planning a trip, always come prepared as much as possible. Researching where you can eat is as easy as one tap on your phone.

Inform your accommodations of your lifestyle – It is best to reach out to your accommodations before going there and inform them that you are traveling as a vegan. They probably have some protocols set in place and will be able to assist you and there are even some hotels that cater specifically to the vegan lifestyle altogether, it is always best to keep looking and to keep trying.

Find a kitchen – When accommodations become a challenge for the vegan lifestyle, not a problem as well, not all places are used to vegans just yet but someday they will be. In the mean time find a hotel with a kitchen or better yet a bed and breakfast with its own kitchen, allowing you access and the ability to make your own eating healthy meals. Again the internet really helps out in traveling as a vegan when you can find places on Air BnB or such sites that can really help you find the perfect place for your lifestyle.

Ask a local – Turn towards your computer, tablet or smart phones once more and search for local vegan groups, they could happily help you in various inquiries and can help you in keeping your eating healthy habit up, as well as steering clear from items that won’t agree with you as a vegan. Traveling as a vegan is sometimes a challenge indeed, but it really helps that there are so many vegan groups out there and quite usually they will happily assist a fellow vegan in need.

No local vegan group, turn to the government – Sometimes there may not be a vegan group in a certain area, no problem at all, turn towards the tourist board of the country or place you are going to. For sure they should have some information for you but don’t expect an unlimited choice of vegan buffets or anything like that, at the very least they can assist you when traveling as a vegan and that’s all anyone can ask for really.

Study up on souvenirs and snacks – Again if you are looking for a restaurant or place to stay, it is ideal to check the local delicacies or souvenirs that are often bought in whatever country you will go to. Traveling as a vegan can be a lot easier when you are properly prepared for the trip, sure keep the adventure alive but don’t go diving in blind, that will challenge your eating healthy habit and will pretty much make the trip almost difficult for you.

Bring a vegan friendly snack – Some of the vegan restaurants might be a few blocks too far. Make sure to always keep some handy snacks ready when traveling as a vegan. After all not every corner in the world has a vegan friendly and eating healthy menu that is made specifically for us, but no worries, when you have a trusty snack ready and waiting, this won’t matter so much. I prefer to bring something easy to carry and easier to eat, maybe a homemade granola bar or such.

fresh market

Be adventurous and try out unfamiliar fruits at the local’s fresh market!

Pack some lunch – This is a step up from a snack, after all a snack is just to tie you over until you reach a vegan restaurant but there are times when a restaurant that caters to the eating healthy habit isn’t readily available, so it is always a smart idea to be prepared. When you are out on tours of certain locations, some don’t have many restaurants to choose from, making it a challenge to keep traveling as a vegan but if you know you’re in for a rather long tour or trip without such restaurants near by, come ready with your packed lunch.

When in doubt go natural – When the trip is rather sudden and the urge of adventure hits you, research might be difficult, no problem at all either, after all everyone deserves to be happy go lucky every so often and sometimes you just have to go for it. If that happens, and you aren’t ready to start eating healthy in unknown places, then go towards the fresh fruit market! There you can find a ton of fruits and vegetables that are perfect for you, maybe even some exotic fruits and vegetables that you have been dying to try. When you are traveling as a vegan, the fresh produce market will always be a great asset to your trip, it is easy to find most of the time all you need to do is ask a local or the concierge of your hotel and they will happily point you in the right direction.

Going on a trip shouldn’t be that difficult. While I agree there are challenges when traveling as a vegan, that should not stop you from going on that grand adventure. Remember that the challenges of being a vegan doesn’t start and end with just eating healthy, the difficulties sometimes is the items used in hotel rooms, souvenirs and others. Be a smart vegan, be a prepared vegan and go on that adventure! Stay healthy!
